Hypnosis is a very controversial subject. Dating back to the 1700s, Hypnosis has its roots in mentalism and similar methods of inducing trance-like states in subjects and, while the subject is in a hypnotic or induced state, attempting to use the power of suggestion to cure illnesses, reduce pain, increase powers of imagination, improve concentration and more. The word "mesmerize" derives from the first recognizable practitioner of hypnosis, Franz Anton Mesmer, an Austrian physician of the 18th-century.
